  • First of its kind program for an automotive TVET institution
  • In line with Govt call to improve value of graduates in Malaysia

(L 2 R): Matt Van Leeuwen, Director - Sunway iLabs and Chief Innovation Officer - Sunway Group; Prof Elizabeth Lee, CEO, Sunway Education Group; Prof Sibrandes Poppema, President of Sunway University; Teoh Jiun Ee, Carsome Co-Founder and CEO, Carsome Academy; Eric Cheng, Co-founder and Group CEO, Carsome and Prof Mahendhiran Sanggaran Nair, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research Engagement and Impact), Sunway University.

Carsome Academy will collaborate with Sunway University to co-develop soft skills modules for the automotive, TVET institution’s Sijil Kemahiran Malaysia (SKM) programs.

This first-of-its-kind collaboration between an automotive institution and Sunway University will culminate in an online curriculum to benefit Carsome Academy students pursuing SKM/Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) courses.

The curriculum comprises six soft skills modules which are Basic and Intermediate English, Basic Concepts of Information Technology Communication Skills, Principles of Management as well as Thinking and Problem Solving Skills.

This curriculum was developed in line with the need to provide more holistic skill sets for automotive students. It focuses on enhancing personal attributes that will equip Carsome Academy graduates for more effective real world interactions as they navigate complex work environments. The curriculum will be delivered by Carsome Academy faculty both online and in face-to-face classes.

Teoh Jiun Ee, Carsome Co-Founder and CEO of Carsome Academy said, “Equipping our students with both soft and technical skills will enhance the employability of Carsome Academy’s TVET graduates, driving up their chances for successful job placements. Ultimately, they will be effective and productive Malaysians within the economy.”

He stressed that the Carsome Academy approach is primarily founded on automotive industry DNA and student-centred. “The reality is technical skills alone are not enough for our students to succeed in their future careers. They would need to work with others in teams to solve problems, develop new services, and achieve organisational goals. This specially designed online curriculum will help them acquire a range of professional skills to succeed in their careers.”

Both Sunway and Carsome point to the collaboration as proof of their commitment to support the Malaysian Government’s clarion call to improve the value of TVET graduates.

Professor Sibrandes Poppema, President, Sunway University said, “Sunway University is pleased to collaborate with Carsome Academy to develop soft skills modules for Carsome Academy and TVET students as part of a holistic education pathway to improve their employability.”

Recently, Carsome Academy together with the Government of Selangor announced scholarships to students who are successfully admitted to the institution. The Biasiswa TVET Selangor Untuk Pelajar Carsome Academy 2023 is offered to Malaysian youth aged between 18 to 40 years old who are born in Selangor and also open to residents of the state who have lived here over the past five years.

The scholarship will be available for 30 deserving students accepted into Carsome Academy in 2023.
