The Tableau on Tour Conference also saw the debut of Tableau 9.0, the latest release of its visual analytics software, which the company said has new capabilities that help people to achieve more with data, and answer questions at ‘interactive speed.’

“From the beginning, Tableau has been designed to help people stay engaged in their analytics flow, with a drag-and-drop interface and features designed for ad hoc analysis,” said chief development officer and cofounder Chris Stolte.

“Tableau 9.0 furthers the notion of ‘flow’ with improvements that keep people engaged with their analysis, rather than having to focus on writing new calculations or cleaning up the data,” he said in a statement issued at the conference.

Meanwhile, Pook (pic above) told DNA that the improvements and new features in Tableau 9.0 are built to suit these needs as it is more intuitive and easier for anyone to use.

“Most people now recognise that there is a need for self-service analytical tools to uncover insights quickly, and yet be easily accessible for business users across all departments to analyse their own data.

“For many of our customers, a common thread in our conversations is the massive amount of real-time data they have to capture and analyse. One of the key challenges that many customers face is using data intelligently and ‘liberating’ data for everyone,” he said.

In addition, the company also opened up Tableau Public Premium features for all Tableau Public authors at no cost.

Tableau Public is a free platform for sharing and discovering data stories on the Web. It claims more than 100,000 users, including journalists, students, scientists, and data enthusiasts.

Pook said he believes that there will be an increased interest in areas like cloud analytics, mobile, and predictive analysis in the coming months.

“In today’s environment, people expect to be able to access and understand their data anywhere, on any device, and to be able to seamlessly share it with others,” he said.

It is also a great time to be talking about data in Singapore, Pook said, thanks to the island-republic’s Smart Nation initiative and its mission to improve the quality of life for Singapore citizens by making data more accessible and verifiable.

“This is gaining momentum, and data visualisation tools like Tableau can play a supporting role in helping people make sense of the data they have at hand.

“Making data accessible and verifiable is only the first step – the next step is in being able to quickly, accurately and efficiently process and understand that data.

“What this means for Singapore’s Smart Nation push is that it will allow people to better explore and ask questions from the data that is available, and make better-informed decisions,” he declared.

75% revenue jump

Meanwhile, Tableau Software reported first quarter total revenue of US$130.1 million, up 75% year on year, for the three-month period ended March 31, 2015.

Licence revenue grew 74% to US$84.4 million, and international revenue grew 89% to $31.7 million.

The company said it added more than 2,600 new customer accounts and closed 249 transactions worth more than US$100,000.

Chief executive officer Christian Chabot described the first quarter results as “strong,” and said that this demonstrated that demand for the company’s offerings continues to grow.

“We started the year gearing up for the launch of Tableau 9.0. During the quarter, momentum started to build as we kicked off product roadshows, giving hands-on experience to thousands of data enthusiasts.

“During the quarter, we added more than 2,600 new customer accounts, bringing the total to more than 29,000 worldwide,” Chabot said in a statement.
