Maxis, Malaysia’s leading integrated telco, continues to make a positive impact through Maxis eKelas, its flagship community programme that aims to improve the academic performance of students in rural communities. The free after-school digital learning initiative has continued to grow from strength to strength, with more than 120,000 registered users on its platform and growing.

As part of the programme, Maxis recently awarded Anugerah Gemilang eKelas 2024 grants to students from nine states across Malaysia in recognition of their academic growth.

Launched in 2017, the Anugerah Gemilang eKelas grant programme honours students who demonstrate significant progress in their educational journeys. In addition to academic improvements, students are assessed based on participation in eKelas activities and competitions, as well as their teachers’ endorsements on their individual growth and development.

During a ceremony held recently for the 2024 recipients, the grants were jointly presented by Fadzliaton binti Zainudin, deputy director, Educational Resources and Technology Division, Ministry of Education, and Goh Seow Eng, CEO of Maxis. The ceremony was also attended by representatives from the English Language Teaching Centre and Sports, Co-curricular & Arts Division of the Ministry of Education.

“We are proud to recognise our Maxis eKelas participants for their academic and personal growth. Their hard work and dedication serve as an inspiration to us on our mission to empower our students through digital learning. Through eKelas, we look forward to supporting even more students on their educational journeys, enabling them to excel well into the future,” said Mariam Bevi Batcha, chief corporate affairs officer, Maxis.

Primary school students were awarded grants worth US$160 (RM750) each whilst secondary school students received grants of US$320 (RM1,500) each. The respective grants were deposited into the students’ National Education Savings Scheme accounts, providing them with future financial support to further their education.

In addition to the grants, Maxis recently completed the contributions of 330 refurbished laptops to 77 primary and secondary schools nationwide. The contributions are aimed at helping the student populations of these schools, especially students in rural communities, to access digital learning resources such as Maxis eKelas.

Open to all students nationwide from Year Four to Form Five, Maxis eKelas provides free access to quality education content in line with the Malaysian school syllabus, focusing on Science, Mathematics, English, Bahasa Melayu and History, as well as experiential learning. Last year, Maxis eKelas officially became part of the Ministry of Education’s digital learning portal DELIMa, further expanding its accessibility for all students and teachers nationwide.

Grant recipient, Cherrylane Rachell Cornalius, a Form Four student from SMK Tun Fuad Stephens, Sabah said, "I believe that effort leads to results; as a recipient of the Anugerah Gemilang eKelas, I am certainly more motivated to continue to improve myself.”

Meanwhile, Chong Pohyi, graduate from SMK Tasek Utara, Johor, said “Through participating in this eKelas competitions, I have learnt to overcome my fear of speaking in front of the public. Now, I’m doing a matriculation programme to pursue my tertiary studies and receiving the SSPN grant certainly helps with my education journey.”
