SAS hires industry veteran to lead in Malaysia

• Was managing director at the Center of Applied Data Science
• Has over three decades of experience under his belt

SAS, a leader in analytics software and services, on Sept 3 announced the appointment of industry veteran Cheam Tat Inn (pic) as managing director for Malaysia.

Cheam will be responsible for driving the growth of the SAS Malaysia business, enabling organisations to realise business value through advanced analytics, artificial intelligence and machine learning.

SAS vice president for Asean Andy Zook, to whom Cheam reports, welcomed him to SAS remarking: “Malaysia is on the cusp of massive transformation and one of the most exciting markets in Asean. With over three decades of experience under his belt and unmatched insight into the technology and business landscape in the country, I’m confident that Cheam is the right person to lead the market into the next growth phase, while making analytics accessible to all our customers in today’s digital economy.”

SAS has been present in Malaysia since 1986, building the analytics lifecycle and supporting customers in industries such as financial services, government and manufacturing, amongst others.

SAS has also played an active role in developing Malaysia’s big data and analytics talent pool, collaborating with universities such as Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) to inspire and train the next generation of data scientists.

Prior to this, Cheam was managing director at the Center of Applied Data Science (CADS) in Malaysia, an industry organisation responsible for driving the mainstream adoption of big data analytics in Malaysia.

He has also held leadership positions at organisations such as EMC Corporation, Sun Microsystems, Nortel Networks, Compaq Computers and IBM.
