U Mobile says ready to build second 5G network on its own, if need be, on completion of SSA process and SHA signing

  • Believes it expertise puts it in optimal position to build second 5G network in Malaysia

U Mobile [partnering Sun Life around 5G services. The telco is confident that it can even go it alone on building Malaysia's second 5G network.

U Mobile is set on completing the share subscription agreement (SSA) process with Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB), taking a positive step towards the signing of the Shareholders Agreement (SHA) to enable the transition to the nation’s dual 5G network model. It's announcement comes on the same day CelcomDigi announced its willingness to lead the development of Malaysia's second 5G network and after Maxis on 7th June made its own announcement.

U Mobile said the announcement underlines its commitment to play a critical role in developing Malaysia’s digital economy and in supporting the government’s 5G ambitions. It believes it is well positioned to roll out the second 5G network, if need be, solely, to help the government realise its ambition of having two 5G networks to drive competition and ensure the sustainability of the telecommunications ecosystem in Malaysia.

“We believe we are in an optimal position to roll out the second 5G network, as apart from our expertise and experience, we are also accustomed to leveraging the latest technology to drive 5G adoption and to showcase the economic benefits that the technology will bring to consumer, business, and public sectors. Apart from that, we will also explore use cases to demonstrate the benefits of 5.5G as part of our efforts to support the country’s digital roadmap."

Its relentless efforts to improve subscribers connectivity experience has led to its base crossing the 9 million mark in 2023 with the achievement of being a six-time winner of Frost & Sullivan’s Malaysia Mobile Service Provider of the Year award.

The telco recently completed a 5G private network proof-of-concept (PoC) for the logistics industry where it worked with a partner to digitise container inspection, a critical element of the logistics process.
