Bank Negara Malaysia's Fintech Week makes a comeback

  • Flagship event returns in January 2022, held in virtual format
  • More than 80 visionary and leading voices in fintech and digitalisation

Bank Negara Malaysia's Fintech Week makes a comeback Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) announced today that it is organising its flagship fintech event – MyFintech Week 2022 (MyFW 2022) from Jan 24 to Jan 28, 2022.

In a statment, the central bank said the second edition of the event will be held in a virtual format and welcome more global participation.

With the theme "Advancing Digitalisation for Recovery, Sustainability and Inclusion," Bank Negara said the event will bring a unique focus on the importance of sustainability and digital technology in reorienting the role of finance to help economies rebuild towards a more inclusive, resilient, and sustainable future.

It will also coincide with the launch of the Financial Sector Blueprint 2022-2026, which will chart the priorities of Malaysia’s financial sector in the next five years, it said.

Citing data obtained from Fintech News Malaysia, Suhaimi Ali, Bank Negara Malaysia’s director of financial development and innovation said, “The fintech industry in Malaysia has accelerated rapidly in recent years, evidently from the 164% increase in the number of fintech companies in 2020 from 2017, as well as the widening array of solutions introduced in the market from e-KYC, e-remittance to digital insurance.

“At the same time, we saw digital payment transactions grow 44% to 4.5 billion in January to August 2021 period compared to the same period in 2019 before the pandemic.”

Suhaimi said QR registration by businesses has increased from 333,952 pre-pandemic to more than one million as of the first half of 2021, driven by strong online and contactless payment demand during the pandemic.

Given these developments, it’s a great time to discuss the emerging trends and strategise for the next level of growth and development, said Suhaimi.

The central bank said MyFW 2022 will bring together more than 80 visionary and leading voices in fintech and digitalisation, together with sustainability experts, and target to generate engaging discussions that lead to actionable insights.

These engagements will be anchored by seven key priorities for the financial sector, namely sustainability, new realities for finance, economy, inclusion and financial health, resiliency, startups and regulations.

MyFW 2022 will also feature two parallel tracks of fintech innovation challenges.

Organised in collaboration with KPMG and 1337 Ventures respectively, this year’s innovation challenge will focus on Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)-aligned innovations to help advance Malaysia’s sustainability agenda in the financial sector, Bank Negara said.

MyFW 2022 will also see several satellite events in collaboration with key partners and more than 60 exhibitors from the industry and around the region showcasing the latest fintech products and services, it added.

Registration for MyFW2022 is now open with early bird registration fees starting from US$18 (RM80) each for a group pass of 3 to 10 delegates to US$24 (RM100) each for single pass for individuals.
