Shell’s road safety programme for tertiary students, the #ShellSelamatSampai Varsity Challenge, crowned Team Curtin_IoT from Curtin University Malaysia as its 2024 grand winner.

Themed Innovative! Captivate! Save Lives!, the challenge invited Malaysian university and college students to incorporate STEM in proposing innovative solutions to address road safety issues.

“Every year, lives are tragically lost due to reckless driving, negligence, and lack of awareness. As responsible citizens, we must unite to make a difference,” said Siti Sulaiman, Country Chair of Shell Malaysia and Senior Vice President of Integrated Gas & Upstream Malaysia. “At Shell, we are committed to instilling road safety values in our youth, empowering them to innovate and lead initiatives that enhance road safety culture within their communities."

The winning team, comprising Wong Zhe Ming, Gigi Hii Shu Qi, and Kho Jia Ann, presented Vision Integrated E-Nose (VIEN): Advanced Vehicular Alcohol Detector and Classifier with IoT-Enabled Surveillance Platform. The system accurately detects and classifies alcohol, distinguishing between intoxicating beverages and non-intoxicating alcohol-based products like hand sanitisers. By preventing intoxicated individuals from driving, VIEN aims to enhance road safety and promote responsible driving.

Team Curtin_IoT competed against five other finalists from Asia Pacific University of Technology and Innovation (APU), Universiti Malaya, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Shah Alam, Multimedia University (MMU), and UCSI College Kuala Lumpur.

“The Shell #ShellSelamatSampai programme introduced us to innovative tools and problem-solving methodologies essential for implementing our project,” said Team Curtin_IoT. “We hope our project will help reduce road-related mishaps and empower society to adopt it for greater road safety."

The grand finale featured a distinguished judging panel, including Ir. Mohd Yusop bin Mohamad, Director of Automotive Engineering, Road Transport Department Malaysia (JPJ); Dr Ahmad Azad Ab. Rashid, Senior Researcher at the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS); and Harnamdav Singh, High-Risk Transport Road Safety Advisor at Shell Malaysia.

Shell’s commitment to road safety in Malaysia began in 1957. The #ShellSelamatSampai Varsity Challenge, introduced in 2017, aims to empower students to devise innovative solutions for road safety. Over the years, the challenge has nurtured brilliant young minds and encouraged out-of-the-box ideas to improve road safety conditions across the country.
