Mimos launches Big Data Digital Government Lab

  • Part of the Digital Government Innovation Network
  • Results from MoU between Mimos, Mampu and MDeC

MALAYSIA’S national research and development agency Mimos has launched the Big Data Analytics (BDA) Digital Government Lab, part of the wider Digital Government Innovation Network announced in January.

The lab is an initiative from a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding between Mimos, the Malaysian Administrative Modernisation and Management Planning Unit (Mampu) and national ICT custodian the Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC).

“With the Lab, we want to accelerate the implementation of BDA in the Government towards ensuring efficient service delivery, knowledge generation, wealth creation, and societal well-being,” said Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Dr Ewon Ebin, who officiated at the launch at the Mimos campus on April 23.

Mimos chief executive officer Abdul Wahab Abdullah (pic) said that the laboratory, which would host government data, would be the platform for the “cross-fertilisation” of data across different agencies and possible integration with social media data.

“The BDA technology platform developed in Mimos will facilitate various ministries and agencies to have a greater level of analytics of the collected data, in strict adherence with the Government’s data security, integrity and sovereignty guidelines,” he said.

At the launching ceremony, four government agencies participating in Proof-of-Concept BDA initiatives were recognised: The Ministry of Finance, the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim), the National Hydraulic Research Institute of Malaysia and the Department of Irrigation and Drainage.

“The National BDA Innovation Network is key in forging public-private sector partnerships towards driving adoption of BDA, cultivating innovation, and building a BDA ecosystem that will impact all sectors of the economy,” said MDeC chief executive officer Yasmin Mahmood.

Mimos is a strategic agency under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.
