U Mobile unveils RM1.5bil expansion plan, promises 2,000 more sites

U MOBILE Sdn Bhd has announced an expansion strategy to strengthen its network through the rollout of an additional 1,000 new 3G (Third Generation) and 1,000 new 4G LTE (Fourth Generation/ Long-Term Evolution) sites.

In a statement, the company said the expansion was part of continuous investments in its existing network infrastructure to provide nationwide coverage, high-speed mobile Internet, as well as to offer seamless connectivity to its consumers.

The expansion, which will cost RM1.5 billion (US$468.8 million) [conversion corrected], is targeted to be completed by the end of 2015, U Mobile said.

“While we may be the youngest among all the telcos, our commitment to innovation and bringing the best mobile and user experience to all our customers have certainly pushed us to achieve more in a shorter duration of time,” said its chief executive officer Wong Heang Tuck (pic above).

“We love being the challenger brand as it makes us move forward without losing sight of our goal of continuously reinvesting into our customers, people and infrastructure,” he declared.

Once the upgrade is complete, the new network rollout will cover key cities and strategic areas within Malaysia, which include the Federal Territories, Selangor, Seremban, Port Dickson, Nilai, Ipoh, Lumut, Penang, Johor Baru, Muar, Kluang, Segamat and Batu Pahat.

The expansion is also aimed at ensuring better network performance geared towards a new generation of consumers who are data-hungry and highly connected, U Mobile said.

Wong also said that U Mobile is expecting to aggressively grow to a targeted market share of 10%, and to increase its revenue by 50% by the end of 2015 when the sites are fully completed. He did not disclose actual revenue figures.

U Mobile said it also recently completed an upgrade of its Business Support Systems which entailed a migration to a new billing platform that will enable end-to-end real-time tracking and customer fulfillment.
