Celcom launches security based 5G smart city solution in Langkawi

  • Working together with Langkawi police and city council to launch 4K video cameras
  • Celcom to expand 5G use cases on island to cargo, fleet management and other use

With the aim of enhancing daily operations for local businesses and authorities, as well as enriching the digital lifestyles of consumers in Langkawi, Celcom Axiata Bhd’s ongoing 5G journey sees the deployment of its 5G Safety and Security Smart City solutions in Langkawi, today.

In collaboration with Langkawi’s Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) and Langkawi Municipal Council (MPLBP), Celcom has deployed its latest 5G Safety & Security Smart City service, which offers a breakthrough in security and monitoring effectiveness with multiple 360⁰ UHD 4K panoramic live video surveillance cameras installed at the famous and picturesque Pantai Cenang in Langkawi.

The 5G Safety & Security Smart City solution was witnessed by Al-Ishsal Ishak, Chairman of Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, together with Muniff Kamaruddin, Chief Strategy and Value Creation Officer of Celcom, PDRM and MPLPB representatives at the Langkawi Police District Headquarters in Kuah.

Idham Nawawi, Chief Executive Officer of Celcom hailed the collaborate with Langkawi’s PDRM and local authorities in spearheading the development and adoption of 5G for Malaysia.

“Celcom’s collaboration with PDRM and MPLPB in Langkawi will allow us to create safer and more secure cities through the adoption of 5G technology. Our 5G Safety & Security Smart City solution enables an enhanced security monitoring system for enforcement units as well as transforms the island of Langkawi into a more secure destination.”

Idham also highlighted the many use-cases for 5G that enterprises, authorities, private and public sectors can take advantage of, expressing Celcom’s eagerness in working with any party to deploy the best 5G services. “As we are aligned with the nation’s fourth industrial revolution, we aspire that our commitment in Langkawi will contribute to the development of the nation’s digital ecosystem,” he said.

Currently, the 5G Safety & Security Smart City solution is deployed at four locations along Jalan Pantai Cenang and two locations at Dataran Cenang, Langkawi. It comes with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and video analytics capabilities that leverages on 5G capabilities of low latency and high data speeds, allowing real-time monitoring and high definition picture quality.

There’s more to come as well. Celcom will be expanding its 5G use-cases to also cover Digital Defense for Beach Boundaries, Crowd Control Monitoring, Digital Control of Inbound and Outbound of Cargo, Fleet Management System, Geo- Fencing & Smart Perimeters and 5G Fixed Wireless Access.

With 5G expected to deliver a differentiated experience, Celcom’s initial 5G tests in Langkawi has resulted in user throughputs close to 1.5Gbps and a latency of 16ms. Celcom’s 5G network in Langkawi applies 5G New Radio technology that features C-band spectrum, Massive Multiple-Input and Multiple-Output (MIMO 64T64R) through 5G Customer Premise Equipment (CPE) technology

Recently, Celcom was appointed by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) as the official connectivity partner for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) 2020, enabling opportunities and showcases of Malaysian companies especially digital startups and IR4.0 related technologies such as 5G Wi-Fi for delegates to experience throughout 2020.

Aside from the Langkawi trial, Celcom had, in July, launched a 5G Live Cluster Field Trial in Petaling Jaya with five outdoor sites and one in-building site at Celcom’s Head Office, where a throughput of 6Gbps was recorded. The trials are being conducted with the objective to test and observe the impact of 5G within commercial and residential areas, taking into consideration environmental impacts on the network and to further accelerate Malaysia’s 5G roll-out.
