In Malaysia, m-commerce to outgrow e-commerce by 3x, says iPay88

In Malaysia, m-commerce to outgrow e-commerce by 3x, says iPay88SOUTH-East Asian online payment gateway provider iPay88 Sdn Bhd said that based on transactions recorded on its platform, it expects mobile-commerce to grow three times faster than the overall e-commerce market in Malaysia.
 
The company claims that about 70% of online transactions in Malaysia takes place on its platform.
 
“In 2015, 3.7 million online shoppers who made purchases through iPay88 systems used mobile devices, compared to two million in 2014,” said its executive director Chan Kok Long (pic).
 
“Meanwhile, as at the first quarter (Q1) of 2016, 1.6 million online shoppers on iPay88 made purchases using mobile devices,” he added.
 
Chan said the growth of m-commerce is clear, given the percentage of traffic from mobile channels recorded in its system: 27% in 2014; 38.4% in 2015; and 48.6% in Q1 2016.
 
“No doubt, the availability of cheaper smartphones and laptops have made the Internet accessible to a whole new demographic. The advent of tablets and smart watches has also broadened the spectrum of Internet usage,” said Chan.
 
“Besides the high proliferation of smartphones, new Internet business models such as those from Grab and Uber that leverage on mobile booking and transactions … are also expected to drive m-commerce volumes,” he added.
 
According to Statista, the value of retail goods purchased via mobile devices globally is projected to exceed US$1 billion in 2018.
 
Meanwhile, PayPal said 28% of the 4.9 billion payments it processed in 2015 were from mobile devices.
