THE P1 telco brand is no more. It is now replaced by Webe, which is positioning itself as a direct competitor to the 'Big Three' of Maxis, Digi and Celcom, according to Packet One Networks chief executive officer Puan Chan Cheong, also known as CC Puan.

At the launch event at the KL Live venue, Puan (pic below) was keen to emphasise that Webe is not just another mobile telco, but a "community" as well.

He positioned Webe as a 'leap forward' in the Malaysian telco space. During the launch event, Puan could not resist a dig at Maxis by promising not to discriminate between customers.

Webe did not give any details of its new pricing strategy at the event. This is expected in the next few days.

Although it might sound like Kickstarter or IndieGoGo, the Webe community does not solicit funds for projects from external backers. Instead it places projects for backing before the community, and the projects which get the most votes are picked for funding by Webe.

There are currently seven projects available for voting on the Webe community site. These are already funded, but are now seeking community approval. Some of these projects, like a zombie movie set in Malaysia and an app to predict dengue outbreaks, are intriguing.
