HMD Global debuts Nokia 6.1 Plus and 5.1 Plus in Malaysia

• Offers Pure Android experience with a guarantee of up to two years of updates
• Both share a similar design but have different internal specifications

HMD Global has introduced not one, but two new mid-range Nokia smartphones: the Nokia 6.1 Plus and Nokia 5.1 Plus for the Malaysian market.

At first glance, the two models look quite similar but the 6.1 Plus stands out as the larger of the two with a striking edge-to-edge design and 2.5D curved glass back. With a 5.8-inch FHD+ resolution display with a notch, giving it a large 93% surface area, it is the perfect size to watch videos and text message with.

On the back, you will find a dual camera array with a 16-Megapixel and 5-Megapixel combo. HMD Global claims its HDR mode helps capture images with greater vibrancy and colour contrast. Capture super detailed selfies with the 16-Megapixel selfie camera in front.

You can also capture bothies, which are photos or videos that use a split screen format to capture imagery or record footage through the phone’s front-facing and rear-facing camera simultaneously. In this way, you don’t have to miss out being in the shot any longer.

Powering the 6.1 Plus is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 processor along with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. You can always expand it with a microSD card up to 400GB in size.

It has a modest 3,060 mAh battery which isn’t massive by today’s standards but it has Type C USB charging so it should charge relatively fast.

Next up is the 5.1 Plus. It shares a similar design language to the 6.1 Plus with an identical 5.8-inch HD+ screen with a large screen-to-body ratio, while accommodating a compact and lightweight design.

Where it differs is in terms of specifications. For starters, it has a MediaTek Helio P60 processor with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage, which is small. But just like the 6.1 Plus you have the option of expanding it up to 400GB with a microSD card.

Impressively, the 5.1 Plus also has a Type C USB charging port, which is uncommon at this price point. Speaking of charging, it packs the same 3,060mAh battery as the 6.1 Plus.

Where it differs from the 6.1 Plus is in having a lower resolution 13-Megapixel and 5-Megapixel rear camera set up and 8-Megapixel selfie camera.

Both the 6.1 Plus and 5.1 Plus come with Android Oreo and gets monthly security updates and up to two years of upgrades to help keep the device secure.

The Nokia 6.1 Plus is available now at RM1,149 inclusive of SST. According to HMD Global the first 2,500 units sold will come packaged with an action camera, tempered glass and silicon cover which is valued at RM300.

Nokia 5.1 Plus will be available from mid-Oct onwards but no price has been announced just yet.
