Xiaomi sells 2.12mil smartphones in 12-hour online sale

CHINESE smartphone vendor Xiaomi said it sold 2.12 million smartphones, hitting total revenue of RMB2.08 billion (US$335 million) over a 12-hour period, during its one-day Mi Fan Festival 2015.

The online retail event was held concurrently in seven markets this year. For the first time, customers from Malaysia, India and Indonesia were included, through Xiaomi’s local country websites.

This tally handily beat Xiaomi’s own record last year for the number of phones sold and total revenue for ‘Singles Day 2014.’ Halfway through the event, Xiaomi announced that total revenue of RMB1.57 billion (US$253 million) had already surpassed the full-day results of both Mi Fan Festival 2014 and Singles Day 2014.

Xiaomi sold 1.3 million handsets during the Mi Fan Festival last year.

Aside from smartphones, Xiaomi also shifted 38,000 Mi TVs and 770,000 accessories, including 200,000 Mi Bands (Xiaomi’s fitness tracker wrist band) and 247,000 Mi Power Strips. Revenue from accessories clocked in at RMB190 million (US$31 million) after 12 hours.

The company recorded 3.05 million orders over the 12 hours, with half-a-million orders shipped out to customers within the same time.

For South-East Asian consumers, Xiaomi introduced new accessories such as the 'on-ear' Mi Headphones as well as a special tie-up with online payment provider PayPal.

Consumers in this region in search of the high-end Mi 4 or Mi Note smartphones however, were left disappointed, as they continued to be unavailable for sale.

In 2014, Xiaomi shifted more than 61 million smartphones globally, with revenue of RMB74.3 billion (US$12 billion). It previously guided towards a 30% sales growth in 2015.

Late last year, technology research firm IDC ranked Xiaomi as the top smartphone vendor in China, and third largest vendor worldwide.
