SILVERLAKE Axis Ltd executive chairman Dr Goh Peng Ooi (pic above), also a Digital News Asia Digerati50, has been named the EY Entrepreneur Of The Year (EOY) 2014 Malaysia.
Goh, who also won the Master Entrepreneur category award, will represent Malaysia and join more than 60 other country winners to compete for the coveted EY World Entrepreneur Of The Year (WEOY) award at the annual WEOY event in Monte Carlo, Monaco next year, EY said in a statement.
“Since its inception, the EY Entrepreneur Of The Year programme has emerged as one of the most prestigious business awards for entrepreneurs in the country,” said Mustapa Mohamed, Minister of International Trade and Industry.
“More significantly, as a global awards programme, it provides a platform for Malaysian entrepreneurs to be showcased on the world stage,” he said after a gala dinner and awards event in Kuala Lumpur on Dec 4.
EY Malaysia country managing partner Abdul Rauf Rashid said, “Having run this programme in Malaysia for 13 years now, it is gratifying to note that the programme continues to attract the interest and participation of Malaysian entrepreneurs from a broad spectrum of industries.
“It is also exciting to see that more women entrepreneurs are stepping forward to be recognised for their contribution and achievements,” he added.
Goh founded Silverlake Axis in 1989. Through his foresight of future technology demands of the banking industry, he built Silverlake into a leading provider of state-of-the-art digital economy solutions and services for the banking and financial services, payments, retail, logistics and insurance businesses.
Today, the group is a multibillion-dollar organisation represented in over 20 countries across Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa.
“Goh Peng Ooi is an excellent example of entrepreneurs who have the foresight and vision to challenge the status quo and ask questions that some haven’t even thought of yet,” said Philip Rao, partner and EOY Malaysia Programme director.
“Through his innovativeness and entrepreneurial efforts, Goh has, over a 25-year period, helped transform the digital landscape and act as an enabler for growth opportunities.
“He has provided comprehensive methods and tools, business applications and technologies to help his customers capitalise on opportunities, thereby contributing to their success in the digital economy,” he added.
EY also presented four other awards for entrepreneurial excellence to the following individuals:
- Emerging Entrepreneur: Calvin Khiu, founder and group CEO, MK Wedding Sdn Bhd;
- Technology Entrepreneur: Ivan Teh (pic), managing director of Fusionex Corp Sdn Bhd and also a Digerati50;
- Woman Entrepreneur: Pat Liew, group CEO and founder, BTC Clothier Sdn Bhd; and
- Master Entrepreneur: Goh of Silverlake Axis.
The four recipients as well as the overall country award recipient were selected by an independent panel of judges guided by a set of globally benchmarked criteria, EY said.
