By Digital News Asia April 28, 2019
- Teams chosen from 102 applicants representing blockchain, AI, Agritech, Cloud
- 4-month programme includes overseas trips, mentor and networking sessions
After a month long selection process, the Selangor Information Technology & E-Commerce Council (SITEC) has concluded its shortlisting of startups eligible for the Selangor Accelerator Programme (SAP) at its opening ceremony held in i-City, Shah Alam on Fri.
30 teams were chosen out 102 applicants, with many from fields and industries such as e-Commerce, AI, Blockchain, Cloud, IoT, Logistics, Agritech and Biotech, among others.
The SAP targets startups based in new or emerging technologies applicable across industries and verticals such as AI, Blockchain, Cloud computing, Big Data, Machine Learning, IoT, Smart City, and e-Commerce, offering them fully-sponsored local and overseas trips, valuable networking opportunities, peer support communities, hands-on workshops, pitching clinics and 1 to 1 mentoring sessions.
“We notice that these digital economy trends are not exactly new, and have been around for the past few years. As consumers increasingly look to digital means to obtain goods and services, it is only natural for businesses to upgrade themselves with cutting edge technology to deal with the demands of the digital economy,” said Yong Kai Ping, Chief Executive of SITEC.
The kick-off to the four-month intensive programme, was attended by Yong, Teng Chang Khim, senior Executive Councillor and chairman of the Standing Committees for Investment, Industry & Commerce, Small & Medium Enterprise (SME) and Gopi Ganesalingam, vice president, Enterprise Development, MDEC who gave the keynote speech.
“The SAP, which would not be possible without the support of the Selangor State Government, allows us to play a direct role in nurturing startups of the future by prepping them to be investor ready through refining their business processes, products and operations. It will expose local startups to pitching and networking opportunities with international investors, companies and innovators, as well as access to mentoring with some of the best leaders around,” said Yong.
“Our programme has been incredibly popular since its first run in 2018, with alumni Dropee obtaining US$350,000 funding, while others received Cradle Fund’s CIP 300 funding”, he added.
All 30 teams presented their 60-second elevator pitches, which summarise their businesses and aims. The first mentor speed dating session for the programme took place immediately after.
