FlySpaces, the ‘Airbnb of office spaces,’ lands in KL

MANILA-headquartered FlySpaces, which describes itself as the ‘Airbnb for short-term workspaces,’ said it has gone live in Kuala Lumpur effective May 6, its fourth city after its home base, as well as Cebu and Singapore.

This comes in the wake of the workspace-search and booking engine landing a US$500,000 investment in January, according to Tech in Asia.

Since its inception in October 2015, FlySpaces has listed over 400 spaces – 150,000 sq meters across its markets – the company said in a statement.

Its clients range from entrepreneurs, startups and SMEs (small and medium enterprises) to large and established companies such as Uber and Mediacorp, it claimed.

Malaysian businesses faced a broad economic slowdown in 2015, which is expected to carry over through 2016, FlySpaces said. Startups and businesses of all sizes now need flexibility in their cost structure more than ever.

Corporate real estate expenses represent the No 1 cost for most of them, followed by payroll, it added.

“After our launch in Singapore, entering Kuala Lumpur was the next logical step,” said cofounder and chief executive officer Mario Berta.

“The two cities share lots of economic activities; Singapore being Malaysia’s biggest trading partner with US$37 billion in exports,” he added. “Kuala Lumpur is a natural extension of our current markets.”

Prior to launching its Kuala Lumpur network, FlySpaces onboarded Kuala Lumpur-based co-working and serviced offices including JustCo, Servcorp, Voffice, Centennial and ICube.

The company said it plans to increase its number of partners, targeting established businesses that wish to monetise their extra office space, to keep up with the demand for more flexible, short-term workspaces.
