IoT-Smart City hackathon to be held in Cyberjaya

KUALA Lumpur-based creative agency Pixaworks Creative said that its JomHack Malaysia initiative is organising the ‘Smart Cities with LoRa’ 24-hour hackathon in Cyberjaya from Aug 5-7.

The hackathon will require participants to build smart city and Internet of Things (IoT) solutions based on LoRa (long range) and Arduino hardware technologies, that can be adopted and implemented by Cyberjaya and other smart cities nationwide.

These solutions can be built on either web or mobile platforms, and anything built at the event is fully owned by the participants, JomHack said in a statement.

JomHack’s partners and sponsors might even provide opportunities to further develop their solutions, and implement them on a larger scale, on top of cash and prizes to be won during the event.

The event is being in collaboration with national ICT custodian Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), Cyberview and Amsterdam-based The Things Network.

Cyberview manages the development of Cyberjaya into a global technology hub by nurturing local entrepreneurs, developing innovative talents and policies, and attracting foreign direct investments.

The Things Network recently crowdsourced a complete citywide IoT data network with the people of Amsterdam in only six weeks using LoraWAN (LoRa wide area network) technology, JomHack said.

The technology allows for things or devices to connect to the Internet without 3G or WiFi.

This ‘Smart Cities with LoRa’ hackathon is limited to only 30 teams (three members per team) with a standard entry fee of RM50 per person, with students required to only pay RM25. [RM1 = US$0.24]
