Telenor hits 200-mil mark, Digi leads smartphone penetration in Asia

- 6 Asian operations generated more than 50% of group’s total revenue
- Around 1.5mil Digi customers have access to its LTE services
TELENOR Group announced that it has surpassed the 200-million mobile subscriber mark, with Malaysia’s Digi leading the way in terms smartphone penetration across among Telenor’s six operations in Asia.
Malaysia has a smartphone penetration rate of 79.2% and a mobile penetration rate of approximately 140%, Telenor said in a statement, citing an Analysys Mason study.
Digi itself has seven million customers, a jump of 16.9% year-on-year, with around 1.5 million customers having access to its LTE (Long-Term Evolution) services, an increase of more than twofold from a year ago, Telenor said.
Telenor is also present in Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Pakistan and Thailand.
“Today, Telenor is in the hands of more than 200 million people from Malaysia to Norway,” said its president and chief executive officer Sigve Brekke.
“Telenor´s early explorers of the 1990s had a vision about bringing the benefits of mobile communications to everyone, but they could hardly have imagined the impact we witness now.
“Today, our vision goes beyond putting a phone in every hand – we envision an Internet for all, and with it all the opportunities that a digital life brings,” he added.
Digi chief executive officer Albern Murty concurred, saying, “Almost everything you want and need today is at your fingertips.
“[The] mobile internet has become an essential and a companion for everyone who has access to it. Our focus therefore is to continue ensuring more people in Malaysia benefit from enjoying quality Internet services nationwide …,” he added.
Telenor entered Asia in 1996, and as of the third quarter 2015, Telenor Group’s six Asian operations generated more than 50% of the group’s total revenue.
