WithSecure Corporation, previously known as F-Secure Business, is on a mission to reshape cybersecurity approaches for modern enterprises.

The company’s President and CEO Juhani Hintikka (pic) recently emphasised the necessity for a holistic approach to cybersecurity which calls for a collective effort from all stakeholders, integrating human behaviour, IT hygiene and the latest technological advancements into cybersecurity strategies.

“Cybersecurity is more than just tools and technologies. Rather, it is about people, practices and keeping pace with constantly evolving threats,” Hintikka said during his recent visit to Kuala Lumpur from the company’s headquarters based in Helsinki, Finland.

Toward this end, WithSecure has introduced its Cloud Security Posture Management product, designed to mitigate risks in multi-cloud and hybrid environments. This product reflects WithSecure’s commitment to developing solutions that address the complexities of modern IT infrastructures and the unique challenges they present.

“The need for a comprehensive cybersecurity strategy has never been more critical, especially with the increased reliance on global platforms and cloud services,” said Hintikka.

He pointed out the misconceptions surrounding cloud security, emphasising that while cloud providers offer a degree of protection, the onus of ensuring total security, particularly content security, lies with the organisations. “Proper configuration and proactive measures are crucial in these environments,” he said.

WithSecure’s approach extends beyond providing tools and services. It involves a deep engagement with clients to align cybersecurity efforts with their business objectives. This is particularly relevant for mid-sized enterprises, which often face limitations in terms of resources and expertise in managing cybersecurity risks.

“We are not just vendors but see ourselves as partners in our clients’ cybersecurity journeys, helping them navigate through complex landscapes with tailored solutions,” Hintikka said.

The company’s forward-thinking strategy also encompasses the design of IT systems, incorporating cybersecurity considerations from the outset. This preventive approach, inspired by practices in other industries like manufacturing, is especially pertinent in the face of emerging threats and opportunities presented by artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning. With over 18 years of investment in these technologies, WithSecure is at the forefront of using AI for both defensive and innovative purposes in cybersecurity.

Hintikka also highlighted the challenges posed by the widespread availability of open-source AI platforms, such as Facebook’s LLaMA, which could potentially lead to AI-driven cyberattacks.

“It’s a dual-edged sword: While AI can significantly enhance our defences, it also arms attackers with sophisticated tools. This necessitates a strategic and adaptive defense mechanism,” he said.

Recognising the global cybersecurity talent shortage, WithSecure is actively involved in educational initiatives in Malaysia. The company collaborates closely with the government and higher education institutions, providing awareness training sessions and internships to nurture the next generation of cybersecurity professionals.

“Our goal is to build a robust cybersecurity ecosystem, starting with education and awareness,” said WithSecure regional director (Asia-Pacific) Yong Meng Hong.

In a landmark move to enhance cybersecurity for local SMEs, WithSecure has partnered with Malaysia’s LGMS Bhd.

“Our partnership with LGMS is a testament to our commitment to delivering context-specific solutions that empower businesses to thrive securely in the digital era,” said Hintikka.

A key outcome of this partnership is the development of the Made-in-Malaysia StarSentry solution, a state-of-the-art, plug-and-play cybersecurity model offering a proactive approach to threat prevention for SMEs. Slated for release in Q1 2024, StarSentry is designed to cater to the unique challenges faced by SMEs, integrating robust security measures with user-friendly interfaces.

“Our collective vision extends beyond cybersecurity; we aim to foster a secure, sustainable digital community,” said LGMS executive chairman Fong Choong Fook.
