Three key takeaways you may not know about the Maxis and Digi Q3 results: Page 3 of 3

3. Big appetite for data

In the second quarter, Maxis announced that its data traffic jumped 23% qoq at 64,000TB -- it was also one of the highest qoq growth in recent quarters. Just when one wondered if the qoq growth would moderate in Q3 2016, Maxis told investors that its data traffic jumped by another 29% qoq. 

A big part of the increase in data traffic is driven by its 4G LTE traffic -- which has more than tripled over the past 12 months.

During the third quarter, its postpaid customers' data usage increased to 3.67GB a month, more than doubled from 1.72GB a year ago. Prepaid subscribers data usage also more than doubled to 2.6GB a month in Q3 2016. 

It also has one of the highest smartphone penetration rate among its peers. In Q3, more than 80% of its postpaid customers own a smartphone, while more than 70% of its prepaid customers own a smartphone. 

In contrast, Digi's smartphone penetration in Q3 2016 was 63.7%.
